Commercial negotiation in Algeria: protect value without losing the customer

Good negotiation does not start when the customer asks for a discount. It starts before the meeting with clear goals, limits, alternatives and value to protect. The goal is a workable agreement, not victory over the customer.

1. Prepare goals and limits

Define the desired outcome, minimum acceptable result, negotiable variables and alternatives if no agreement is reached. This prevents improvised concessions under pressure.

2. Understand interests behind positions

When a customer says the price is too high, the real issue may be budget, risk, timing or comparison. Ask questions before reducing price.

3. Never make a free concession

Every concession should be exchanged for something: volume, duration, faster payment, stronger commitment or reduced scope. This protects value and the balance of the agreement.

4. Close the agreement precisely

End by confirming agreed points, responsibilities, deadlines and the next step. A vague agreement creates problems later even if it felt successful at the table.

Frequently asked questions

Is a discount always necessary to close a sale?+

No. Teams can often protect price by clarifying value, adjusting scope or changing payment conditions.

How should a seller react when a customer threatens to choose a competitor?+

Clarify the comparison criteria first, then focus on meaningful differences, risks and total outcomes rather than price alone.

What is the most important step before negotiation?+

Preparation: goal, minimum acceptable outcome, alternatives, customer information and tradeable variables.
